The Kazdag Massif exposes an extensional metamorphic dome in the Biga Peninsula of northwest Turkey, bounded on both flanks by detachments and/or shear zones. The northern flank is marked by the extensional Alakeci shear zone (ASZ), with poorly known P-T-t path. We therefore focus on metamorphic conditions and temporal history of the ASZ to determine its tectono-metamorphic evolution. ASZ mylonites were derived from both the footwall Kazdag Massif core metamorphic rocks and the hanging wall Cetmi melange lithologies. The mylonitic fabrics in the ASZ depict a top-to-the NNE shearing, parallel to the NNE-plunging stretching lineation and NNW-dipping mylonitic foliation. This geometry implies normal sense movement i.e. north-side down-dip extensional displacement along this flank of the Kazdag Massif. The northward transition from ductile to brittle-ductile shear regime through the ASZ shows that the non-coaxial deformation occurred at decreasing temperatures and degree of metamorphism. The paragenesis in equilibrium of the mylonitic gneisses and schists contains quartz + feldspar + muscovite + biotite + garnet staurolite, with late retrogressive chlorite after biotite and garnet. Calculated thermo-barometric conditions for ASZ rocks yielded pressures between 6.9 and 5.7 kbar and temperatures between 706 and 587 degrees C, which constrain the peak metamorphism. The mylonitic rocks supplied isochron Ar-39/Ar-40 mica ages between 26.97 and 24.19 Ma, which we interpret to date the cooling of the mylonites following the P-T decrease across the ASZ. The metamorphic data support the structural record and strengthen the extensional character of the ASZ. The transition from sillimanite-bearing footwall Kazdag Massif core gneisses in the deeper structural levels to chlorite schists; towards the shallow structural levels at the top of the ASZ, is consistent with an extensional exhumation of the metamorphic pile. These data allow us to determine the peak P-T conditions and the temporal evolution in the northern flank of the Kazdag Massif, where Late Oligocene extensional exhumation was assisted by NNE-directed ductile-brittle ASZ, which had operated from amphibolite to greenschist facies. The ASZ, together with similar time-constrained ductile-brittle activity of SW-directed detachment along the southern flank of the massif, collectively indicates a bivergent mode of extension in the western Kazdag Massif. The latter is likely influenced by magmatic activity spatially and temporally related to these extensional zones. At the regional scale, the bivergent tectono-metamorphic pattern of the Kazdag Massif is similar to those observed on other places of the north-central Aegean domain.

To better understand the microstructural evolution of a "serpentinized" mantle rock and the influence of various hydrous phases on the seismic properties of the mantle wedge, we have conducted the detailed microstructural analyses of a sample of tremolite-chlorite-antigorite schist collected from the Moses Rock dike (central part of the Colorado Plateau). We performed differential effective media (DEM) modelling to study the effect of three hydrous phases forming two-phase aggregates with olivine, considering the crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of each phase and the shape ratio of the hydrous phases. We have demonstrated that in a partially serpentinized peridotite, the olivine CPO characteristic of [100](010) dislocation glide is still preserved, and the high-temperature asthenospheric flow is preserved with a foliation normal to that of antigorite schist. The transformation of olivine into antigorite occurs predominantly (~ 75%) by the relationship (100)ol || (001)atg with [001]ol || [010]atg, with the (010)ol || (001)atg and [001]ol || [010]atg relationship observed in areas of weak antigorite CPO. Chlorite results from the phase transformation of olivine in a relatively static environment, as shown by the correlation between the olivine-chlorite CPOs with (100)ol || (100)ch, (010)ol || (001)ch and (001)ol || (010)ch. The fluid percolation that caused the localized metasomatism and partial hydration of the mantle occurred possibly along trans-lithospheric shear zones. The presence of chlorite induces the most important drop on the P-wave velocities and may help to explain some local low velocities in the fore-arc mantle wedges, but is unlikely to be of global importance due to its very high Vp/Vs ratio ~ 1.9. On the other hand, antigorite is the only phase that causes important modification on the propagation directions of P and S-waves, and the only phase to explain the polarization of the fastest shear waves parallel to the subduction trench.

The Cerro del Almirez massif (Nevado–Filábride Complex, Betic Cordillera, SE Spain) is composed of antigorite (Atg-) serpentinite and chlorite (Chl-) harzburgite separated by a thin reaction front formed in a palaeo-subduction setting. These ultramafic rocks preserve unique prograde structures related to the pre- and peak high-pressure event (1.6–1.9 GPa and 680–710 °C). The oldest subduction-related structures are preserved in Atg-serpentinites: a penetrative S1 foliation and associated L1 stretching lineation that formed in a non-coaxial regime with a top-to-the-W sense of shear. This planar–linear fabric is crosscut by olivine ± Ti-clinohumite veins, formed during the prograde breakdown of brucite and pre-metamorphic clinopyroxene, which form a system of veins decimetres long. They record embrittlement processes due to the release of 6 vol.% of H2O associated with brucite dehydration. The growth of prograde olivine and/or tremolite porphyroblasts is syn- to post-kinematic in relation to the S1 foliation. Further reactions at higher temperature related to the complete breakdown of the Atg (i.e. Atg-out) are post-kinematic to S1. Prograde Chl-harzburgite is crosscut by sets of conjugate zones associated with grain-size reduction of olivine grains. These grain-size reduction zones are interpreted as brittle structures generated by hydrofracturing due to overpressure fluids in a compressional setting at low-differential stresses.Structures related to the exhumation process are mainly preserved in the metasedimentary host rock, where an S2/L2 planar–linear fabric developed within a shear zone dominated by a non-coaxial regime with a top-to-the-W sense of movement in a transpressional regime. Peak metamorphic conditions deduced for the schists are similar in pressure (1.3–1.9 GPa) but lower in temperature (560–590 °C) compared to the ultramafic rocks in contact with them, suggesting a major shear zone at the base of the ultramafic massif during D2 deformation in a right-handed transpressional regime.

Résumé : Atmospheric carbon dioxide records indicate that the land surface has acted as a strong global carbon sink over recent decades, with a substantial fraction of this sink probably located in the tropics, particularly in the Amazon. Nevertheless, it is unclear how the terrestrial carbon sink will evolve as climate and atmospheric composition continue to change. Here we analyse the historical evolution of the biomass dynamics of the Amazon rainforest over three decades using a distributed network of 321 plots. While this analysis confirms that Amazon forests have acted as a long-term net biomass sink, we find a long-term decreasing trend of carbon accumulation. Rates of net increase in above-ground biomass declined by one-third during the past decade compared to the 1990s. This is a consequence of growth rate increases levelling off recently, while biomass mortality persistently increased throughout, leading to a shortening of carbon residence times. Potential drivers for the mortality increase include greater climate variability, and feedbacks of faster growth on mortality, resulting in shortened tree longevity. The observed decline of the Amazon sink diverges markedly from the recent increase in terrestrial carbon uptake at the global scale, and is contrary to expectations based on models.

Résumé : We aimed to enhance understanding of the molecular diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) by building a new global dataset targeting previously unstudied geographical areas. In total, we sampled 96 plant species from 25 sites that encompassed all continents except Antarctica. AMF in plant roots were detected by sequencing the nuclear SSU rRNA gene fragment using either cloning followed by Sanger sequencing or 454-sequencing. A total of 204 AMF phylogroups (virtual taxa, VT) were recorded, increasing the described number of Glomeromycota VT from 308 to 341 globally. Novel VT were detected from 21 sites; three novel but nevertheless widespread VT (Glomus spp. MO-G52, MO-G53, MO-G57) were recorded from six continents. The largest increases in regional VT number were recorded in previously little-studied Oceania and in the boreal and polar climatic zones - this study providing the first molecular data from the latter. Ordination revealed differences in AM fungal communities between different continents and climatic zones, suggesting that both biogeographic history and environmental conditions underlie the global variation of those communities. Our results show that a considerable proportion of Glomeromycota diversity has been recorded in many regions, though further large increases in richness can be expected in remaining unstudied areas.

The Kazdağ Massif exposes a metamorphic dome in the Biga Peninsula of northwest Turkey. An extensional origin has been proposed for the dome, limited on both flanks by detachments and/or shear zones. The northern flank is bounded by the extensional Alakeçi Shear Zone (ASZ), whose P-T-t path is still poorly known. We therefore focus on its metamorphic conditions and related temporal history to precise its tectono-metamorphic evolution. The local tectonostratigraphy in structurally ascending order comprises: (i) the high-grade metamorphic core rocks of the Kazdaǧ Massif (gneisses and micaschists intercalated with amphibolites and marbles); (ii) the two kilometer-thick ASZ; (iii) the overlaying unmetamorphosed pre-Cenomanian accretionary Çetmi mélange; and (iv) Neogene sedimentary and volcanic cover rocks. ASZ mylonites were derived from both the core rocks and the mélange lithologies. From the north to the south the mylonitic fabrics in the ASZ depict a top-to-the N-NNE shearing, parallel to the NNE-plunging stretching lineation and NNW-dipping mylonitic foliation. This geometry implies normal sense movement i.e. north-side down-dip extensional displacement along this flank of the Kazdaǧ Massif. The northward transition from ductile to brittle-ductile regime through the ASZ shows that the deformation occurred at decreasing temperatures and degree of metamorphism. The paragenesis in equilibrium within the mylonitic gneisses and schists contains Qtz + Fs + Ms + Bt + Grt ± St ± Sill, with late retrogressive chlorite after biotite and garnet. Four samples of ASZ rocks yielded pressures between 6.9-5.7 kbar and temperatures between 706-587°C. Three samples from the mylonitic rocks supplied in situ isochron 36Ar/40Ar mica ages between 31.2-24.2 Ma, which we interpret to date the cooling of the mylonites following the P-T decrease across the ASZ. The metamorphic and structural results support the extensional character of the ASZ, and sketch transition from sillimanite core gneisses in the deeper structural levels to chlorite schists towards the top of the shear zone. These new data allow to precise the peak P-T conditions and the temporal evolution in the northern flank of the Kazdaǧ Massif, where Late Oligocene extensional exhumation was assisted by NNE-directed ductile-brittle ASZ, which had operated from amphibolite to greenschist facies. At the regional scale, this tectono-metamorphic pattern is similar to those observed on other places of the north Aegean domain.

Over the years, a number of different models and techniques have been proposed to both quantify and explain the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) process. There are serious challenges, however, to obtaining accurate results from measurements, due to noise in the data and the long periods of time necessary to identify the relatively small-magnitude signal in certain regions. The primary difficulty, in general, is that most of the geophysical signals that occur in addition to GIA are nonstationary in nature. These signals are also corrupted by random as well as correlated noise added during data acquisition. The nonstationary characteristic of the data makes it difficult for traditional frequency-domain denoising approaches to be effective. Time-frequency filters present a more robust and reliable alternative to deal with this problem. This paper proposes an extended S transform filtering approach to separate the various signals and isolate that associated with GIA. Continuous global positioning system (GPS) data from eastern Canada for the period from June 2001 to June 2006 are analyzed here, and the vertical velocities computed after filtering are consistent with the GIA models put forward by other researchers.

At Cima di Gagnone, garnet peridotite and chlorite harzburgite lenses within pelitic schists and gneisses correspond to eclogite-facies breakdown products of hydrated peridotites and are suitable for studying dehydration of serpentinized mantle. Thermobarometry and pseudosection modelling yield peak temperatures of 750-850°C and pressures <3 GPa. The minimum temperature recorded by the garnet peridotite corresponds to the maximum conditions experienced by the chlorite harzburgite, suggesting that these rocks recrystallized cofacially at ∼800°C. Alternatively, they might have decoupled during subduction, as achieved in tectonically active plate interface boundaries. The major and rare earth element (REE) variability of the peridotites was mostly acquired during pre-subduction mantle evolution as a result of partial melting and reactive melt flow. The ultramafic suite is also characterized by fluid-mobile element enrichments (B, Pb, As, Sb, Cs, Li, U, Be), which confirm derivation from variably serpentinized protoliths. Similarity in the U, Pb, B, Li and Sr contents of the Gagnone peridotites to present-day oceanic serpentinites suggests that these elements were partly taken up during initial serpentinization by seawater-derived fluids. Positive Be, As and Sb anomalies suggest involvement of fluids equilibrated with crustal (metasedimentary) reservoirs during subsequent subduction metamorphism and peridotite entrainment in (meta)sediments. Fluid-mobile element enrichment characterizes all peak eclogitic minerals, implying that multiple hydration events and element influx pre-dated the eclogite-facies dehydration. Peak anhydrous minerals retain B, Li, As and Sb concentrations exceeding primitive mantle values and may introduce geochemical anomalies into the Earth's mantle. The relatively low contents of large ion lithophile elements and light REE in the Gagnone peridotites with respect to much higher enrichments shown by metasomatized garnet peridotite pods hosted in migmatites (Ulten Zone, Eastern Alps) suggest that the crustal rocks at Gagnone did not experience partial melting. The Gagnone garnet peridotite, despite showing evidence for chlorite dehydration, retains significant amounts of fluid-mobile elements documenting that no partial melting occurred upon chlorite breakdown. We propose that the Gagnone ultramafic rocks represent a prime example of multi-stage peridotite hydration and subsequent dehydration in a plate interface setting.

We present new, full geomagnetic field vector results from three Neolithic ovens discovered at the archaeological site of Portonovo (Marche, Italy). The discovered structures are a rare example of very well preserved underground ovens from the Early Neolithic period. Standard thermal demagnetization procedures were used to isolate the direction of the Characteristic Remanent Magnetization acquired by the baked clay during the ovens' last firing. The corresponding archaeointensities were determined by the multi-specimen procedure (MSP-DSC) and show a clear intensity low during the Neolithic period. Both directional and intensity results are of high quality, offering the first contribution of full geomagnetic field vector data for this period in Italy. The new data are compared with other contemporaneous data from Europe and with global geomagnetic field models. Independent archaeomagnetic dating of the three ovens was also performed by means of the SCHA.DIF.14k model. The obtained results are in excellent agreement with available radiocarbon dates and confirm that all ovens belong to the Neolithic. These new data importantly enrich our knowledge of the geomagnetic field during the Neolithic period that is poorly documented by data, not only in Italy but also in the whole of Europe and show that archaeomagnetic dating can provide precise results even for prehistoric periods.

Résumé : The occurrence and preservation of aragonite in eclogite-facies rocks of north-eastern Corsica is linked to an uncommon microtexture. Aragonite exclusively occurs as oriented fibres in garnet crystals of a graphitic, more or less siliceous marble that immediately overlies a serpentinite body of the meta-ophiolitic unit. The arrangement of the fibres is grossly radial, but more clearly sectoral in subhedral garnet, the fibres growing perpendicular to the garnet/matrix interface. Raman mapping reveals that the carbonate is calcite in the matrix and in poikiloblastic garnet cores, and that the fibres in the garnet mantle are aragonite alone in the case of a carbonate matrix, and both aragonite and quartz (in distinct fibres) in a quartz–carbonate matrix. These features are interpreted as prograde intergrowths, the result of garnet nucleation and growth in a calcite and then aragonite matrix (±quartz). Upon further heating and/or decompression, the aragonite matrix transformed back to calcite while the carbonates included in garnet retained their original structure, in spite of the relatively high temperature attained (ca. 500 °C). These aragonite relics are one more example of the preservation of a high-pressure polymorph through mechanical shielding of inclusions in a rigid host. The aragonite–garnet intergrowths are similar to quartz–garnet intergrowths described in amphibolite-facies graphitic schists. They are evidence that oriented inclusions in garnet are not necessarily precipitates (‘exsolutions'). Unlike precipitates, their orientation is controlled more by the shape of the garnet growth front than by symmetry constraints.

Résumé : This thesis has been conducted on a fractured crystalline basement located in Ploemeur (South of Brittany, France). The detailed study of this basement requires a good understanding of their internal structures, namely their intrinsic properties, flow mode, density and fractures distribution. This work is focused on the petrophysical characterization of the granitic formations. Physical properties were determined from downhole geophysical measurements and images, and petrophysical measurements with thin sections made for each mini-core in the laboratory. Fresh-altered schist and fresh-altered granite separated by a normal angle fault are the main lithology of the Ploemeur crystalline basement. The results showed that the petrophysical properties were function of both porosity variation and degree of alteration and that the pore-space topology was found to be porositydependent. This thesis introduces a new formula between electrical resistivity and porosity. In addition, the laboratory measurements of Ploemeur revealed that seismic wave velocity was a function not only of porosity, but also of the predominant pore type. In general, the pore aspect ratio inverted from velocity measurements were classified roughly into crack shape. In the Ploemeur crystalline basement, the downhole geophysical measurements and images were used to measure changes in physical and chemical properties in the borehole fluid and the bedrock surrounding the boreholes. The effective integration of different geophysical methods, hydrogeological tests and lithological description was the best way to characterize the fractures in the crystalline basement, and is critical for a suitable estimation of fluid circulation.
Le socle cristallin fracturé, situé à Ploemeur (Bretagne sud, France) est l'objet de ce travail de thèse. L'étude détaillée du socle nécessite une bonne compréhension de la structure interne, à savoir les propriétés intrinsèques, le mode d'écoulement, la densité et la distribution des fractures. Ce travail de thèse est consacré à la caractérisation pétrophysique des formations granitiques. Les propriétés physiques ont été déterminées à partir de l'interprétation des données de mesures de géophysique en forage, des images de paroi du puits et des mesures pétrophysiques réalisées sur carottes en laboratoire. Afin de replacer les mesures dans leur contexte lithologique, une lame mince a été analysée pour chaque mini-carotte. Les formations lithologiques rencontrées dans le socle cristallin de Ploemeur sont des schistes et granites sains et altérés, ces deux lithologies étant séparées par une zone de faille. Les résultats ont montré que les propriétés pétrophysiques des roches étaient fonction à la fois de la variation de la porosité et du degré d'altération des roches et que la topologie de l'espace poreux était fortement dépendante de la porosité. Cette thèse introduit une nouvelle formule entre la résistivité électrique et la porosité. De plus, les mesures en laboratoire sur les échantillons de Ploemeur révèlent que les vitesses sismiques ne sont pas seulement fonction de la quantité de porosité, mais aussi fonction de facteur de forme. Ce dernier a été calculé sur les échantillons du socle de Ploemeur à partir des vitesses acoustiques. Les résultats ont montré que la porosité est de forme fissurale. L'intégration des données issues des images optiques et acoustiques, des mesures de géophysique en forage, et de la description des carottes a permis d'étudier de façon détaillée la géologie et l'hydrodynamique du socle de Ploemeur. L'intégration effective de ces différentes méthodes avec les tests hydrogéologiques ressort comme la meilleure façon de caractériser les fractures et les circulations en eau dans le socle.
